At the beginning of May 2018, I participated to my first Svalbard expedition on board the MS Freya. This was a long time dream for me so you can imagine how excited I was to step on the ship in Longyearbyen on 4 May 2018 for our departure. This first blog post about the Svalbard expedition is like a diary. I will write a few words about each day, with of course many photos. Each photo is accompanied by the settings that I used.
The solar minimum may be on its way but it does not mean that we will not see Auroras anymore in Lapland. A coronal hole created enough disturbance to spark bright Auroras in Inari. Check out all the pictures from the best northern lights display that I have ever witnessed.
Northern Lights Tours are the best way to increase your chances to see the Aurora. In January, my Italian guests booked me 2 nights in a row for a tour, and we were in for quite some adventures. Check out how it went!
With unreliable weather forecasts, we had a very challenging Northern Lights Excursion around Inari with my guests from Australia. They came from so far away and it was their only chance to see the Aurora Borealis! Check out how we find the Northern Lights between Inari and Utsjoki after so much driving!
When I travelled to Lapland at the occasion of the Inari Camera Borealis festival, I also guided a few guests to see and photograph the Aurora. On 18 November, despite the rather weak forecast, we were in for a treat!
This year 2017 has provided amazing displays of Northern Lights up in Northern Finnish Lapland. Check out my own 7 favourite pictures of the year.
As landscape photographers, we often prefer impressive sights. Those usually happen around sunrise or sunset, with clouds at the right place, sun at the right angle, and bright hues of orange, red and/or pink all around. But landscape photography in the fog is also possible and actually quite exciting. I tried a minimalistic approach there on the Kaunispää fell in Saariselkä, Finnish Lapland, to make the best of this day.
On 6 December 1917 Finland declared its independence from Russia. This marked the birth of the Republic of Finland as we know it today. The 100th anniversary of the declaration of independence on 6 December 2017 was widely celebrated in Finland and even throughout the world. Because Finland has been giving me so much in my photography journey during the past few years, I decided to write this blog post to say: happy birthday Finland!
Where is the best place to see Northern Lights is a question that is frequently asked to me. I have done extensive research before travelling myself to see the Aurora, and have concluded that Inari is the best place for this. There are scientific, cultural and touristic reasons for this. Check them out here.
